While sitting on the couch with Theresa in the living room – Sam discussed with her on how to sort out their finances cos he thought within himself that he could never have a better chance of talking to her for hours. Though, any time he was at work, he finds time to call Theresa.
After a long time of talk with Theresa, Sam called Randy with a distinctive voice. Randy was sitting in a chair inside his room chomping on an apple. He replied in a loud deep voice, ‘yees dad! I will be with you in a mo’.
In no time, Randy entered into the lounge. He plonked himself down into the couch beside his mum putting his hands round her arm.
‘It seems as if you’ve won a trophy ‘, said Theresa with a wink – smiling.
‘ I always pray for such moments mum’. Although, Randy was fifteen, he aspires for great things.
‘Just keep dreaming big, also, work hard into your goals. I know you will make your papa proud ‘,said Sam with a grin.
‘ Sure dad! I won’t let you down’, replied Randy confidently.
‘Yeah, that’s my boy’, said Sam. He continued in a more serious tone, ‘Randy, I actually called you now to know how you are doing at school, any changes?’
‘ Yeah dad, I think I have to forget science as a course ‘.
Sam and Theresa listened attentively.
‘ Like you know mum, I had always told you how I failed physics and chemistry every now and then. It’s absolutely appalling. ‘
Right after the word -appalling, Randy stood up. He headed towards the dinning – at the right corner of the lounge. Straight to the mini fridge he went, opened it up and got himself a bottle of water.
‘ Dad, I want to change my course, what do you think?’, said Randy, while going to back to have a seat.
‘Huh! What do you want me to do, boy?’, asked Sam. He made a funny face and shifted his position slightly. ‘Have your school got a whatchamacallit? You know… a school counsellor?’
Theresa watched as Randy replied
‘Sure dad’
‘A man or a woman?’
‘A man’
‘Have you ever made a go of telling him about your probs?’ Sam asked without hesitating.
‘Yeah, I went to see him yesterday ‘, replied Randy.
‘ So, what was his reply? ‘
‘ He asked me if I had a favourite subject, I told him yes’
‘What subject is that? ‘
‘ Economics ‘, replied Randy, drinking a bit from the bottle.’ I really love economics ‘, he added.
‘ Okay then, I think you should switch over’, said Theresa, patting him on the shoulder.
‘Yeah, I have no other options ‘
‘ To commercial? ‘, asked Sam. ‘ or what course? ‘ He nodded towards Randy.
‘ Oh, yes, of course’, replied Randy.
If somebody says he loves economics, what should he then go for again? Randy wondered. But he wasn’t surprised. Sam’s usual way was to ask shedloads of questions, in order to understand people properly – the nature of his job made him so.
‘Well, please forgive me for not having the time to discuss this with you earlier’, said Sam, feeling a little sad. ‘I have got to find another job or have my own business. I want to be close to my family.
‘Do not be in a hurry dad. Keep doing your work. If you’ve got enough capital, then you can start up your own biz. Don’t worry about mum and I, we would take good care of ourselves. Afterall, you’ve always been there for us’. Looking at Sam, Randy added, ‘Cheer up dad!’
Sam smiled at Randy. Theresa smiled too.
‘Randy’s right. I absolutely understand how you feel. You know, that’s part of life. Like Randy said, for the mean time, keep doing your work. If you’ve got enough capital, then you can start up your own business. God will definitely help you’.
‘Thanks a lot!’, Sam said. He looked at the time, it’s already midday. ‘Dear, what shall we have for lunch?’
‘I won’t tell you what I will prepare’, she replied, standing to her feet.
‘you know, I am nervous to do lunch with you’, Sam declared and winked at her.
Randy fetched for the telly remote control and turned it in to watch the news at noon while Theresa went to the kitchen to prepare lunch.
