At the end of a lecture. 'Are you having any more lecture today?', asked Fiona - Randy's classmate.

'Nah, nah', replied Randy, standing up. 'What about yer?' he asked

'Yeah!', she replied. 'See you tomorrow, bye'. She waved him goodbye.

Where could Paula be?, Randy asked himselfwalking down the stairways.

Whenever Paula was not in school, he would be like, I've got to board a cab or I can't walk home alone, it'll be boring.

Paula was chatting with a mate - Gladys. 'That's Randy!', said Paula. She pointed at his direction. 'I would better scoot, see you!', she told Gladys.

Randy didn't see them.

'Alright, catch yer tomorrow ', said Gladys.

                                        ***

While Randy was waiting for a cab, Paula called from behind. Just then, Randy was relieved - he would be walking homeward bound with someone.

'Grin-grin-grin!', the clock in Randy's room chimed six. He stood, stretched and yawned, washed his face using the wash basin in his ensuite and got himself prepared for breakfast.

To Randy,  nothing tasted better than bacon and eggs - he enjoyed his breakfast.

                                ***

'Cheerio mum!', Randy said. He got his rucksack from the couch and headed to the door.

'Oh dear, I'll see you when I see you, take care!', replied Theresa, momentarily.

Outside the gate, the pedestrain-crossing was really working than usual, vehicles moved like snails. Students walked to school, business men and women walked to work, probably because of the traffic.

Randy stood for minutes before he could wave a cab. Thank goodness! He got into the cab.

'Hey, Randy!',
'Paula!, Randy was surprised at the coincedence. 'How are you doing?'.

'Am Okay Ran, you?'

' Am cool'

'How was your night?', Paula asked, smilingly.

''T'was fine, what about yours?', he unbuttoned his blazer.

'Same here', replied Paula.

The traffic reduced. It's cool inside. The cab was conditioned.

'Have you done your commerce homework?', Paula asked.

'Yeah', Randy replied confidently. 'What about you?', he asked.

'Yerrrr', she replied.

When the cab reached their destination, Randy paid for the fare and they alighted.

At home

What a facinating subject, Randy  thoughtafter closing his commerce homework book.

He rose from the chair he was sitting on and looked at the wall-clock. It was 5:50pm. I've got to listen to the news.

                               ***

'Can I turn the telly on, mum? It's five to five', asked Randy. He just entered the lounge.

'Yeah, it wont disturb me', Theresa replied. She was checking for new mails on her PC. As a fashion designer, she is sometimes engaged in attending to customers. She've had this experience for over twelve years. Immediately she graduated from secondary school, she went to a fashion institute - Horders fashion institute, where she studied fashion designing. She started her career as a top executive in a fashion firm. But later broke off for three years, when the company went bankrupt.

At the end of the news

What’s next, Randy yawned. He stood up and walked to  his room.

That night, Sam came home earlier than usual. He beeped, then the gatekeeper opened the gate. Sam wind down.

'Hello! Tony', said Sam to Tony.

Tony grinned a broad grin. 'Welcome sir!'

'Thanks, I have got something for you', Sam said, picking the stuff he bought - inside a gift-wrap at the right seat in the car.

Opening the gift-wrap, it was a mobile device, a PDA, that was inside. 'Am very grateful, thanks a lot'

'No big deal!', said Sam. He got out of the car, walked to the entrance door and rang the door bell.

The door opened. 'Boom!', Theresa yelled with excitement.

'You scared me', said Sam. He smiled placing his hand on his chest.

'I knew you were the one at the door, I saw you from upstairs', said Theresa, helping him with his briefcase.

On wednesday - May the 31st it was a dull cold day. Randy had to put a tarbard on.

Students are all seated in their classes getting set for the days lectures.

'Blimey!, i've left my commercial textbook at mine', said Randy to Gary - a boy seating next to him, by the right.

Mrs Beatrice - the commerce subject teacher - a fair fat woman of medium height was soon to come into the class.

'What am I going to do now ', Randy told Gary, looking disappointed.

'Don't let it bother you', said Gary.

Gary has always been a good mate to Randy. He took his rucksack and placed his own textbook on his table.

'Hey, Randy!', he called. Randy was already looking out through the window - thinking on how to skip the lecture.

'Let's share, shall we?'

'Oh yeah, thanks a lot, I appreciate'.

Whenever it was time for a teacher to come into the class, everyone would get prepared. They bring out their writing materials - pen, notepad, textbook and such like.

The period was coming to an end when Mrs Beatrice entered the classroom. 'Morning class!' she said.

'Morning ma!', the whole class chorused.

'I am sorry I'm late', she apologised. 'Today, I will give you all some homework to do cos very soon this period would be over. Write these up in your notes...' she told them what to do and left the class.

How I wish every winter morning would be as bright as today, Randy told himself while entering into the school compound. It's a Monday.

He rolled his eyes upwards. Every student was supposed to join a queue, but some of them stood outside their class room. Some of them - upstairs, standing close to the balcony.

I thought I heard someone calling. He looked around as he walked towards the stairways.

'Randy!', the voice called again.

 Randy halted

It was Ferd. 'Hi bloke, how're you doing?'

'Am good man, you?'

They shook hands warmly.

'Am Okay Randy, hope you enjoyed your weekend.'

'yeah thanks, it was fun. You?'

'Same here'

'What’s new, no assembly?', asked Randy.

'I don't know, I asked the same when I came into the school but no one seems to know why', said Ferd.

'There must be a reason why'.

They both chatted. Greeted some of their mates that walked past them - while standing near the entrance of the stairways.

Shortly, Randy suggested. 'I think we should go to Mr Barry's office so we know why there isn't an assembly yet, shall we?' He puts his two hands into his trousers pockets.

'No probs', replied Ferd.

Mr Barry - the principal of Handerson's college - was a tall man, about six feet tall. He is fair skinned. He is aptly described as ~ tall, fair, handsome and friendly. Some of his students would also add *brilliant* to it.

Randy and Ferd arrived his office, a minute flight of stairs.

Ferd gave a sharp rap on the door.

'A second please', said Mr Barry from inside. He was working on some papers.

Few seconds later, the door opened and they walked him. 'Good morning sir', they both Greeted.

'Good morning boys', answered Mr Barry in a calm low voice.

'Please take a seat'

'Thank you sir', said Randy and Ferd simultaneously.

'Actually, we wanted to know why there hasn't been any assembly yet', said Randy.

'Oh!', Mr Barry interjected. 'Is Toby not in school?', he asked.

'I have not seen him today', said Ferd.

Toby was the prefect in charge of keeping to time and ringing it as appropriate.

'Please take the bell Randy', said Mr Barry.

The bell was at the side of a top shelf. Randy took it.

Mr Barry instructed him to ring the bell and to Ferd - 'help me call Mr Nathan'.

Mr Nathan was the school geography teacher.

They left his office and did as directed. All students assembled in the main hall. Not long after that, Mrs Morgan- the schools english teacher, addressed the assembly and then they all went into their classes.

As for Randy, school was stimulating that day, than ever.

Lying on his front - on the bad, his mind was absolutely occupied with the help and support Paula gave him. She made him understood a particular format in Financial accounting which he did not understand very well.

It's one of his best days.

Moments later, his clock alarm went off - it was 7 o'clock. It's time for him to make a note on the experiences he had during the day. He got out of bed, took his diary from the bookshelf and sat on a swivel chair - placing the diary on the table in front of him. He opened to a fresh page. He wrote:

Dear Diary,

Today, the 30th of May 2015 is definitely a day I will remember at some time in the future. First of all, I woke up in the small hours of the morning. I had my prayers, brushed my teeth, had my bath and got prepared for school.

The time finally came. Mr Craig taught a topic I was unable to understand while he thought it. I felt a bit down after he left the class. Although, I asked him some questions but still couldn't understand him.

In a mo, it's break time. I was supposed to break for lunch, but I was worried and eager to see if I could scale through, all to no avail.

So, I decided to go for a break. I stood up and walked to the class DOOR. Suddenly,i heard a voice - 'Randy', twas Paula. 'What’s the matter Ran?', she asked me.

I tried to cover it up but it didn't work. Then, I had to tell it out. Thank God she knew it. She taught me in a way I understood better. Infact, it is an epitome of a perfect day.

To cap it all, I felt great!

It was a breezy sunday afternoon, the sky was blue and the sun was shining bright.

Randy and Paula were walking home – after church. They walked home without their parents cos the youth coordinator visited their church. He discussed with the them briefly.

‘The talk was absolutely brilliant, said Paula. What do you think?’, she asked.

‘Yeah, twas fantastic', Randy replied. ‘He is known to be an important motivational person, the talk was really facinating.’

‘yer right, God is using him pretty well for us’, said Paula. ‘So, are you going to school tomorrow?’, she asked, at the moment of parting.

‘Sure, you know am new in the commercial department and test is fast approaching', replied Randy, sounding funny in a Yoruba tone of accent.

‘l will see you in school tomorrow’, said Paula laughing.

‘Alright. Bye!, see you tomorrow’.

Paula waved bye-bye they both went to their respective homes.

‘Someone is ringing the doorbell’, Sam told Theresa. She was reading a literature. On the other hand Sam was busy with his sub notebook

Theresa quickly left the book on the couch and rushed to open the door. It was Randy. He embraced her and greeted Sam. Sam gave him a quick look and softly replied, ‘welcome son’.

‘Thanks dad’, replied Randy.

Wonderful meal’, said Sam, feeling relieved.

‘I will be in my room’, said Randy. He heard a loud buzzing sound from his room.

Who sent me a message?, he asked himself as he walked to his room.

Randy sat at his table, set, about to read the message from his laptop computer.

It was a message from Paula – a childhood friend. They grew up knowing each other and also attended the same school. They do things together. Both families visits each other from time to time.

Clicking the option button to view the message. Randy read the message, wearing a smile as he read the words.

‘How are you doing?’

‘Am fine, thanks. So, how are things with you? Still enjoying home?

‘Everything is fine, it’s just that am not enjoying staying at home. Thank God that tomorrow’s weather would be Okay’

Randy was surprised, ‘how did you know about that?, he asked.

‘ I saw it on the news few minutes ago’

‘I missed it. I know that you would want to ask me ~ Randy, don’t you watch the news? ~ pah! I do. When lunch was ready, I had to go for lunch.’

***

Later at night, Randy put on his evening wear and prepared for the next day. Then, he went to the lounge to tell his parent about the news.

Few minutes after dinner Sam got a news from his boss telling him to resume duty the next day.

While sitting on the couch with Theresa in the living room – Sam discussed with her on how to sort out their finances cos he thought within himself that he could never have a better chance of talking to her for hours. Though, any time he was at work, he finds time to call Theresa.

After a long time of talk with Theresa, Sam called Randy with a distinctive voice. Randy was sitting in a chair inside his room chomping on an apple. He replied in a loud deep voice, ‘yees dad! I will be with you in a mo’.

In no time, Randy entered into the lounge. He plonked himself down into the couch beside his mum putting his hands round her arm.

‘It seems as if you’ve won a trophy ‘, said Theresa with a wink – smiling.

‘ I always pray for such moments mum’. Although, Randy was fifteen, he aspires for great things.

‘Just keep dreaming big, also, work hard into your goals. I know you will make your papa proud ‘,said Sam with a grin.

‘ Sure dad! I won’t let you down’, replied Randy confidently.

‘Yeah, that’s my boy’, said Sam. He continued in a more serious tone, ‘Randy, I actually called you now to know how you are doing at school, any changes?’

‘ Yeah dad, I think I have to forget science as a course ‘.

Sam and Theresa listened attentively.

‘ Like you know mum, I had always told you how I failed physics and chemistry every now and then. It’s absolutely appalling. ‘

Right after the word -appalling, Randy stood up. He headed towards the dinning – at the right corner of the lounge. Straight to the mini fridge he went, opened it up and got himself a bottle of water.

‘ Dad, I want to change my course, what do you think?’, said Randy, while going to back to have a seat.

‘Huh! What do you want me to do, boy?’, asked Sam. He made a funny face and shifted his position slightly. ‘Have your school got a whatchamacallit? You know… a school counsellor?’

Theresa watched as Randy replied

‘Sure dad’

‘A man or a woman?’

‘A man’

‘Have you ever made a go of telling him about your probs?’ Sam asked without hesitating.

‘Yeah, I went to see him yesterday ‘, replied Randy.

‘ So, what was his reply? ‘

‘ He asked me if I had a favourite subject, I told him yes’

‘What subject is that? ‘

‘ Economics ‘, replied Randy, drinking a bit from the bottle.’ I really love economics ‘, he added.

‘ Okay then, I think you should switch over’, said Theresa, patting him on the shoulder.

‘Yeah, I have no other options ‘

‘ To commercial? ‘, asked Sam. ‘ or what course? ‘ He nodded towards Randy.

‘ Oh, yes, of course’, replied Randy.

If somebody says he loves economics, what should he then go for again? Randy wondered. But he wasn’t surprised. Sam’s usual way was to ask shedloads of questions, in order to understand people properly – the nature of his job made him so.

‘Well, please forgive me for not having the time to discuss this with you earlier’, said Sam, feeling a little sad. ‘I have got to find another job or have my own business. I want to be close to my family.

‘Do not be in a hurry dad. Keep doing your work. If you’ve got enough capital, then you can start up your own biz. Don’t worry about mum and I, we would take good care of ourselves. Afterall, you’ve always been there for us’.  Looking at Sam, Randy added, ‘Cheer up dad!’

Sam smiled at Randy. Theresa smiled too.

‘Randy’s right. I absolutely understand how you feel. You know, that’s part of life. Like Randy said, for the mean time, keep doing your work. If you’ve got enough capital, then you can start up your own business. God will definitely help you’.

‘Thanks a lot!’, Sam said. He looked at the time, it’s already midday. ‘Dear, what shall we have for lunch?’

‘I won’t tell you what I will prepare’, she replied, standing to her feet.

‘you know, I am nervous to do lunch with you’, Sam declared and winked at her.

Randy fetched for the telly remote control and turned it in to watch the news at noon while Theresa went to the kitchen to prepare lunch.

END RESULTS Chapter two

In the early hours of the morning as at 7 o’clock, Same was still sleeping. Theresa thought, why is Sam not awake? What’s he dreaming about? She looked at him and grinned cos if it’s on a work day he would have waked her up for breakfast.

She had just finished her quiet time, she did it on bed. Looking at the wall clock, it was five minutes after seven. How time flies, she said to herself.

She got out of bed, opened the curtains, but did not open the window. The brightness of the sky was not like the normal every day morning sky-it was dim a little bit. The weather was really weird.

The heating wasn’t on. Theresa had to go turn the heating to have a warm house.

Few hours later, Sam woke up not seeing Theresa in be. He had his prayers, read his bible, watched his face, brushed his teeth and walked to the lounge –  a well furnished spacious lounge, having a tall rectangular shelf for books. The room was made chiefly of furnitures – except for the couch, door, window and few other things.

‘Morning dear’, said Sam to his wife. He sat down on the couch Theresa was sitting on.

‘Morning dear’, said Theresa. How was your night?’, she asked.

‘It was fantastic, you know, it’s been a long time I slept this way’, replied Sam, cheerfully.

After listening to the news on tele. Sam bloke the silence ‘we have to have the family devotion now, where is Randy?’

Randy appeared immediately Sam said ‘Randy’.

‘Morning dad, morning mum’, said Randy, yawning. He sank into a chair.

It’s been a while they held it this way. If it were to be a normal day when Sam will go to work, it would be just him and Theresa – very early in the morning and if he didn’t come back from work, Randy and Theresa will have it together.

When the devotion was finished, Randy went back to his room.

It was a freezing foggy holiday, an unpredictable holiday in Victoria Island. Why was it unpredictable? the minister of science and technology announced on social media that it’s going to be chilly.

Sam – a tall slim bloke – a very busy banker. He was the brains behind UNN bank. He never had good time with his family ever since he got the full-time job as the manager of UNN bank.

This is the best time to talk to my family, he imagined within himself as soon as he heard the news on radio.

They only see him at times and when he was off work during the weekend. He barely goes to church. Anytime he was at home, it is either he was attending to clients, a customer or a person who is interested in working with the bank – all with his sub-notebook.

Several times, he would drop off at his desk when he used the computer. although, he squeezes out time to talk with his wife – Theresa and also his son – Randy.
